Hocking County wedding vendors: how to build your local wedding team

The Barn at Red Brick Ranch, a Hocking Hills wedding venue in Logan, Ohio

Hocking Hills couples have an advantage most big-city couples do not: a small, close-knit group of wedding vendors who know the back roads, the weather and each other. Hiring local usually means fewer travel fees and a team that already knows the area. Here is how to build yours, in the order we suggest booking.

1. Venue and date

Everything else depends on the date, so lock this in first. If you want guests to stay where you celebrate, look for a venue with lodging on the property. At Red Brick Ranch, The Barn has 4,000 square feet of heated space for up to 200 guests, on 125 private acres with two homes for the wedding party.

2. Photographer

Popular local photographers often book far ahead for fall dates. Ask to see a full gallery from one wedding, not just highlights, and ask whether they know the Hocking Hills parks for portraits.

  • Elizabeth Nihiser Photography, Logan: adventure elopements, micro weddings and proposals, with more than a decade of local experience.
  • Kalena Ogg Photography, Logan: weddings, portraits and family sessions. Call (740) 380-3761.

3. Caterer

Because we have no required caterer, this is your call. Ask whether staff, plates and cleanup are included, since those change the real price.

4. Officiant

  • The Traveling Chapel, Logan: comes to any Hocking Hills location to perform your ceremony.
  • Naber's Nuptials, Hocking Hills: ceremonies built on "laughter, love and unforgettable memories."

You will also need an Ohio marriage license from a county probate court; check the court's current requirements before your date.

5. Florist

  • Flowers by Darlene, downtown Logan: a full-service florist that specializes in weddings.

Tip: a barn and a meadow already bring a lot of color. Put your flower budget into the bouquet, the ceremony arch and the head table.

6. Hair and makeup

  • Bridal by Quincy: an on-site bridal hairstylist, so the wedding party can get ready together in the Brick House.

7. Rentals and signs

Our packages include tables and chairs for 150, so many couples only rent linens, extra seating or specialty pieces.

  • Party Plus, Lancaster, (740) 994-4374: supplied the rentals for the first wedding at Red Brick Ranch.
  • Graph X Productions: printed the wedding signs you see around the ranch.

Questions to ask every vendor

  1. Are you available on our date, and how long do you hold it?
  2. What is included, and what costs extra (travel, overtime, staff)?
  3. Have you worked at our venue, and do you need to see it first?
  4. Do you carry liability insurance? Many venues ask for it.
  5. What is the deposit and the cancellation policy?
